National Archives | Washington D.C. Landmark Series
In 1934, the National Archives was created by Congress with a crucial mission: to safeguard and maintain the records of the U.S. Government. Before its establishment, federal records were scattered across various locations, such as basements, attics, abandoned buildings, and other storage spaces, often lacking proper security and care for preservation.
In 1935, a dedicated team of Archives staff and workers from the Works Progress Administration (WPA) undertook the essential task of surveying federal records. The following year marked a significant milestone as the first batch of federal records was transferred to the newly constructed National Archives Building in Washington, D.C. This purpose-built facility provided a secure and suitable environment to house these invaluable historical documents, ensuring their preservation for future generations.
The co-founder of A. B. Newton and Company, Andy Crabtree, skillfully depicted this iconic landmark with a delightful blend of playful and sophisticated artistic flair.
